Seychelles-South Africa

Swearing in of new leader paves way for stronger ties

President James Michel has highlighted the strong historical links between the African National Congress (ANC)-led government of South Africa and his own as the basis for enhanced future collaboration between the two countries.

The President made this remark following the inauguration on Saturday of Jacob Zuma as the fourth democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa, "The governments of South Africa and Seychelles have sought to achieve people-centred development based on the principles of human dignity and equality. The inauguration of President Zuma offers renewed opportunities to build and strengthen ties with South Africa in many sectors," the President said in a statement from Pretoria.

The inauguration of President Zuma brought together almost thirty different heads of state mainly from the African continent.

President Michel has also availed of the opportunity to further sensitise fellow leaders of the need for enhanced coordination in fight against piracy in the Indian Ocean.

"It is important that we continue to explore means for improved sharing of information, communications and surveillance and military cooperation at all levels - including our regional bodies such as SADC (Southern African Development Community) and COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa).

“A coordinated approach which includes tackling the root causes of piracy will mean that we can make piracy non-profitable," the President stated.

Having sought to engage the international community on the issue of piracy and following discussions with Japan, France, Spain, the European Union, India and USA, President Michel has stressed the need to bring regional partners from the African coast on board as well.
