Accord on fibre-optic landing station signed - 11.12.2010
An agreement was signed yesterday for the Tanzanian company Zantel to provide the landing station for the fibre-optic cable that will boost Seychelles’ connections with the rest of the world.
The landing party agreement was signed at the International Conference Centre by Ahmed Afif – chairman of the Seychelles Cable Systems (SCS) company which comprises the government, Cable & Wireless and Airtel – and chief executive Norman Moyo of the telecommunication service provider Zantel. The event was attended by principal secretary for information communication technology Benjamin Choppy, PS in the Vice-President’s Office Jeanne Simeon, Cable & Wireless chief executive Charles Hammond and Airtel’s director for technical services Rajesh Agrawal. Mr Afif called the signing a milestone, saying the government attaches great importance to the project which is why it is one of the partners forming the SCS.
He said Seychellois will soon start to enjoy the fruits of the project, along with other users based overseas. Zantel was chosen as the landing party cable host based on its previous experience; it is now hosting the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System. It is from the landing station in Tanzania that the Seychelles East Africa System is expected to be linked to the global network through a greatly enhanced broadband internet connection.
