ADB executive director on five-day visit
President James Michel yesterday welcomed newly-appointed executive director for the East African Constituency of the African Development Bank (ADB), Dr Mulu Ketsela, who is here on a five-day visit.
Dr Ketsela also called on Vice-President Danny Faure.
Commenting on the discussions she had during her calls at State House, Dr Ketsela said the country has done quite a lot over the past 10 years in restructuring its debt and the ADB considers Seychelles as one of the most important regional member countries and partners.
She said most of the portfolios that have been financed by the ADB have been performing quite well which is very encouraging before adding that she is sure the ADB will help Seychelles in accessing and leveraging additional resources not only from the ADB but from other partners outside of the ADB.
Dr Ketsela added that other countries have learned from Seychelles, especially in environmental protection which she has described as a huge achievement. She also pointed out that Seychelles has been diversifying its economy and is doing quite well although there is still more to be done and that the ADB is willing to help.
She also noted that Seychelles has a vibrant economy.
During her visit, Dr Ketsela will have the opportunity to discuss the country’s development challenges and to strengthen the relations between the ADB and Seychelles.
She was elected executive director for the Constituency at the African Development Bank’s annual meeting held in Marrakesh, Morocco in May 2013 for a three-year period. She replaces Ms Mary Muduuli whose term ended earlier this year.
With a PhD in Economics, Dr Ketsela has had an extensive career as senior government official in Ethiopia, including as economic advisor (with ministerial rank) to the President of Ethiopia, and subsequently, as economic advisor to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia. She was also a board member of the Development Bank of Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Road Authority.
Between 2001 and 2005, she served as a State Minister of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. She has worked as economic consultant and as expert in various international organisations, including the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) in New York and Geneva. She has also taught economics to undergraduate students at the College of New Rochelle and New York University for a number of years.
From February 2005 to November 2008, Dr Ketsela served first as the alternate executive director, and subsequently as the executive director, representing 22 African countries in the World Bank group’s board.
Dr Ketsela also called on Vice-President Danny Faure.
