Cost of living in further fall during December
13.01.2010
Prices dropped further last month as year-on-year inflation fell to minus 2.5% for December from 0.5% in November, new official figures show.
“The all-items index in December 2009 stood at 181.1 compared to 185.9 in December 2008.
Year-on-year, this represents a price decrease of 2.5%,” the National Statistics Bureau said.
“This significant decline in year-on-year comparison of prices is a result of the completion of a full 12-month cycle since the introduction of the macro-economic reform programme, when the local currency was floated.”
The all-items index includes such costs as fuel, transport, insurance and other services.
Consumer prices increased slightly, month-on-month, by 0.4% in December, having fallen for the previous five months.
Fish prices increased by 1.6% in December from the month before. Fruit prices fell by 4.1% and bread and cereal costs were down by 1.3%.
World economists are saying Seychelles is quickly recovering from the sweeping fiscal and monetary reforms launched late in 2008 to modernise our economy.
Among the reforms was the lifting of exchange rate controls in November 2008, which soon saw an abundance of previously scarce foreign exchange but also a rise in commodity prices, which have since been falling.
