Doors continue to open for our youth

14.03.2010

Education is the key to success, they say, and that is one of the major tools the government of President James Michel is striving to give our youth.

Doors continue to open for our youths

The new military and police Young Leaders programmes launched this week will add Seychellois professionals to the increasing pool being prepared to steer our country into the future.

Already, skilled young people have graduated from the first Seychelles Young Leaders Programme and they will be joined in the near future by others from the new University of Seychelles.

As our economy grows and diversifies, we will need all these young leaders to help manage it for the new Seychelles that is evolving and offering more opportunities in all fields.

Training the leaders is only one example of what the government is doing, and there are many other efforts.
When the professionals move into top positions, they will leave gaps to be filled by younger Seychellois, hence the many other training options now being offered – for example for small business entrepreneurs.

We are all part of a rapidly growing development pyramid, and as we improve ourselves we move closer to the top, raising the level and standard of life in our country. But to do that, we all need to work Together, Ready for the Future.

For example, more of us should support the growing economy by providing extra fish so as to reduce prices and meet the rising demand for food in the tourism and local sectors, which calls for more boats.

But this will not be possible if our seas are unsafe, and that is why President Michel on Wednesday stressed the role of the young police and military leaders.

He said the shift in modes of criminality needs to be accompanied by a shift in how we deal with such crimes, including new and updated laws.

A better trained and more dynamic police force will always be a key part of the equation, he said, adding that piracy threatened our economy and raised the need to be vigilant and ready to continue protecting our resources and our people.

Our armed forces have responded impressively to the threats, and we know our resources are secure. With such assurances,
we should work hard in our various sectors so that all aspects of our development are catered for.
