En Moman avek Prezidan - 03.05.2012 President stresses value of healthy lifestyles
President James Michel has urged the Ministry of Health to embark on an aggressive public health education campaign on the dangers of substance abuse on people’s health and on the need for individuals to take care of their own health.
Mr Michel said community health should be developed further to support the public education campaign in raising awareness on various health problems afflicting our people today.
The President made those remarks during the En Moman avek Prezidan programme aired at the weekend.
Mr Michel said while the government remains committed to continue putting in place the necessary infrastructure and ensure delivery of quality services in hospitals and health centres around the country, the people should not only be looking at the level of the services being offered but should also be concentrating on living healthy lifestyles and taking their responsibility to preserve their health.
“The Ministry of Health is a very important ministry because it is responsible for the health of a nation and it is always under public scrutiny and judgment,” Mr Michel noted.
The President added that with the recent appointment of a new minister for health and other professionals to join her in due course, the new team is expected to continue to bring about improvements to the health system and possibly some changes in the structures of hospitals and health centres, all with the aim of providing a better health system for our people.
But there again, this responsibility should not be the health ministry and the government’s alone but that of each and every one of us together, Mr Michel said.
Commenting on the recent changes at the head of the health ministry, Mr Michel said these are not as much as in other ministries.
He noted that these changes take place after the situation of not only the health ministry but that of other ministries and government agencies have been closely studied, assessed and monitored.
He added that the rotation and transfers of ministers and other cadres is a normal procedure to ensure that people with responsibility and competence bring their contributions to different sectors of government.
Almost two months after restructuring the government, Mr Michel said a lot of consultations have taken place and are still going on with the new ministerial team.
“The people have witnessed, through various media reports, the new dynamism and the new push towards a change in the way of doing things. This is because in the New Seychelles we have to change the way we have been doing things. The world is changing and Seychelles has to change with it,” the President stressed.
Mr Michel added that now that he has already received all the plans and targets of all ministries, in the coming weeks he will start meeting the ministers and their technicians individually to discuss what are being proposed in the above mentioned documents.
After all this would have been carried out and the various documents would have been validated and approved by the Cabinet, it would be the responsibility of each ministry to ensure the successful realisation of their plans and targets.
“Each ministry will have to ensure they deliver in order to bring the country towards the next stage as the demands of the New Seychelles requires,” he said.
