Fibre-optic cable contract to be signed today - 10.11.2010

A contract to lay a fibre-optic cable from Seychelles to Tanzania – greatly improving the broadband internet connection – is due to be signed today.

The Department of Information Communication Technology said the contract for the French-based firm Alcatel-Lucent to supply and lay the cable will be signed by the Seychelles Cable Company, which comprises the government of Seychelles and the telecommunications operators Cable & Wireless and Airtel.

The high-power submarine cable system is called the Seychelles East Africa System and will improve Seychelles’ connectivity with the rest of the world. It will provide high internet bandwidth capacity at a cost-effective price for all telecommunication firms licenced here.

The signing will take place at the Seychelles Tourism Academy, La Misère.
