Ghana seeks to learn from Seychelles forest conservation experience
Ghana has expressed the desire to exchange and learn from Seychelles in the area of not only the blue economy but also the green economy, especially forest conservation.
Discussions on the subject were held yesterday between the visiting Ghanaian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Hanna Serwaah Tetteh and the Seychelles Minister for Environment and Energy, Professor Rolph Payet.
Seychelles’ commitment in terrestrial and marine protected areas, as well as the long-term sustainability of oceans were also on the agenda. Minister Payet briefed his counterpart on the different plans and policies that his ministry have implemented to continuously ensure sustainability and maintain our islands’ track record as a world environment leader.
Exchanges and possible cooperation in the energy sector were also discussed in the meeting yesterday morning at Minister Payet’s secretariat.
Ghana currently produces electricity by hydro energy from the Akosombo Hydroelectric Project, a hydroelectric dam on the Volta River in the southeastern part of the country. As Seychelles is currently using wind and solar energy, Minister Tetteh said her country is eager to learn more and benefit from Seychelles’ experience with the wind farm and photovoltaic projects.
Education at university level was another area explored. Professor Payet, who is the pro-chancellor of the University of Seychelles, learned that there is the possibility of exchanges with two national universities from Ghana.
Minister Tetteh was accompanied at the meeting by a five-member delegation. Also in attendance was the principal secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Wills Agricole.
The Ghanaian delegation is here on an official visit which ends today.
Seychelles established diplomatic ties with Ghana in 1988.
