IMF advice set to help taxpayers and boost trade
08.09.2009
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday gave recommendations that will make it easier for tax payers to comply with the law and also help to boost trade.
David Kloeden, who headed an IMF mission that recently analysed our tax system, handed the set of recommendations to Finance Minister Danny Faure.
Revenue commissioner Rene Nusse said the ministry will now look at this
aide-mémoire over a period of about three weeks, prepare a response and decide what parts will be adopted.
He said the recommendations are being taken very seriously and “the bulk of the aide-mémoire will be implemented to some degree”.
Mr Nusse said the recommendations are based on streamlining our tax system with a view to making it easier for tax payers to comply with the law and also to ease trade.
“It will also be easier for people to import and export goods while at the same time we continue to protect our borders and collect trades tax,” he said, adding that the IMF mission was very successful.
“These people are very knowledgeable and they have a wealth of experience both in tax administration and customs. We are very pleased with the outcome.”
He explained that though it does not contain any secret material, the aide-mémoire is not a public document.
