Macharios Trust Fund donates to President’s Village
The Macharios Trust Fund on Saturday made a donation to the President’s Village situated at Port Glaud.
The Macharios Foundation was created by the late Archbishop Macharios of Cyprus, who was exiled in Seychelles by the British colonial government between 1955 and 1959.
Upon his return to his country, he was elected president.
His love for Seychellois children led him to create the Trust Fund which at the time aimed at helping less fortunate students attend secondary school.
On behalf of the Trust Fund, the Honorary Consul of Greece in Seychelles Tasos Pantazopoulos presented the toys, food stuffs, soft drinks, milk, educational materials and other items which he had himself brought in from Greece to a representative of the Village, Daphné Elizabeth.
He had made the trip to Port Glaud accompanied by the fund’s chairperson Justice Karunakaran and other members, namely Father Edwin Mathiot, Bishop French Chang-Him and Stella Napier.
Jules Hoareau, a representative of the Children’s Home Foundation which administers the village, was also present as well as other members of staff and children.
“You are not alone”, Mr Pantazopoulos told the children as he promised to make more donations in the future.
“We appreciate every gift no matter how small or big,” was the reply from a young girl, Bernada Wilcock.
Before hitting the road back to Victoria, Father Mathiot and Bishop Chang-Him blessed the village, the children and the people who take care of them.
Meanwhile, the management of the President’s Village is calling on other benefactors to come forward and contribute to the well-being of the children living there, with school stationery and school bags as the most needed items for the moment.
