Mitsubishi to showcase electric cars in Seychelles

The feasibility of introducing electric cars in Seychelles will be demonstrated next month with the arrival of the first such vehicles built by Japanese firm Mitsubishi.

This announcement was made by representatives of the company during a meeting with the Minister for Environment and Energy, Professor Rolph Payet, earlier this week.

The group are currently in the country to meet all agencies to finalise the plans for the introduction and to also seek government support to undertake a comprehensive study on the introduction of electric cars on the main islands, including specific support for La Digue, as part of President James Michel’s vision of making La Digue the first energy efficient and green island.

During the meeting Professor Payet learned more about the company’s “Toward Zero-Emission Islands” proposal from a consortium comprising experts from the Mitsubishi motors, Nomura Research Institute, Fuji Electric, Sumitomo Corporation and the experiences learned from similar projects on the Japanese Gotō Islands (an archipelago of 140 islands inhabited by 65,000 people).

Minister Payet highlighted his support for this initiative, which was brought about through local Mitsubishi agency, British Motors Ltd, and highlighted the need for proper consultation with all government agencies, such as the Seychelles Land Transport Agency as well as potential customers.
