04.09.2009
Two new services were launched on Wednesday as part of the continuing development of the Seychelles National Archives.
The first was the opening of an archives shop in the 5th June Avenue building, followed by the start-up of its website, www.sna.gov.sc
Principal secretary for youth, sports and culture Denis Rose officially launched the services in the presence of archives director Alain Lucas and staff, members of the National Assembly and of the diplomatic corps.
Also present were director general for culture Raymonde Onezime and other officials.
The national archives, established in1964, is where the most important documents of Seychelles are kept. It gives residents as well as visitors the chance to gather information from various sources such as letters, reports, memos and photographs.
Mr Rose said the Seychelles National Archives saves the past for the future, with emphasis on both preservation and use.
He said the shop will boost the preservation efforts through the revenue it raises, while the website will foster use of the archives by the public.
“We call on all travel agents to include this shop as part of their tour of Victoria to help Seychelles become an important cultural tourism destination,” said Mr Rose.
He also called on teachers and students in all educational institutions to make the most of the archives for all aspects of their studies on Seychelles.
Souvenir maps, photographs, plates, mugs and books are on sale at the shop, with prices ranging from R15 to R1,800 for Seychellois and visitors alike.
