Seychelles ranked second in Africa
Seychelles has been ranked second in Africa in the Networked Readiness Index (NRI) 2014 which assesses 148 countries based on their capacities in the information and communication technology (ICT) sectors.
The ranking was done by the World Economic Forum and was released on Friday April 25, 2014 in an article written by Gareth van Zyl.
According to the Seychelles News Agency, Seychelles, with a population of 90,000 people, moved from position 79 in 2013 to 66 in 2014 in the world in the index prepared by the non-profit international organisation based in Switzerland.
Seychelles scored highest in the readiness sub-index for infrastructure and digital content (43), IT (information technology) skills (44), the political and regulatory environment (49) and also in the business usage sub-index (55).
First place in Africa is held by neighbouring Mauritius who moved up seven places to 48th position from 55 in 2013 in the world. Mauritius has a population of 1.2 million.
In the African region, South Africa ranks 70th on the index, Egypt 91st, Kenya 92nd, Nigeria 112th, Libya 138th, Madagascar at 139th, Mauritania 142nd, Angola 144th, Guinea 145th, Burundi 147th and Chad last at 148th.
In the global World Economic Forum rankings, the top countries in ICT are Finland at number one, Singapore number two, Sweden number three, Netherlands number four, Norway number five, Switzerland number six, the United States number seven, Hong Kong number eight, the United Kingdon number nine and South Korea number 10.
A total of 54 indicators are used to assess the ICT capabilities, including affordability regulatory, innovation and business as well as infrastructure environments.
In 2013 Seychelles maintained first position in ICT development in the African region in a separate index developed by the ITU.
The Seychelles News Agency adds that according to the 2013 edition of ‘Measuring Information Society’ (MIS) report published annually by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in Geneva, Switzerland, Seychelles was ranked 64th out of 157 countries for the Information and Communications Technology Development Index.
According to the ITU report, Seychelles has 100 percent mobile phone penetration, 47 percent of its population uses the internet, and there is 12% fixed (wired)-broadband penetration.
Seychelles has two telecom providers – Airtel Seychelles and Cable & Wireless Seychelles – which compete for the business of the communication-loving islanders. Kokonet and Intelvision, two other local companies also provide internet services.
