New 3D film: ‘Aldabra – Once upon an island’

World premiere tomorrow at Deepam’s

Seychelles will host the world premiere of the much talked-about new 3D film on Aldabra titled ‘Aldabra – Once upon an island’.

The film will be screened tomorrow at the newly renovated Deepam’s Cinema La Salle d’Oeuvres during the press conference in the lead up to the sixth Carnaval International de Victoria from April 22-24.

Directed by Steve Lichtag and produced by Peter Keller Czech of film company Starlite Pictures, this impressive family film made in breathtakingly clear 3D offers an amazing aperçu of the creatures which inhabit the atoll as it plots their lives, antics and struggle for survival.

The 73-minute long film which showcases the talents of US writers involved in the making of such prestigious offerings as Lion King andFinding Nemo has been crafted from some 30 hours of raw footage and with a production crew of some 40 people.

The film is described as ‘An adventurous 3D expedition to the shores of a mysterious island lost in the waters of the Indian Ocean. To an atoll, which has stubbornly rejected human life yet is home to a community of exotic animal characters and their entertaining tales.

Aldabra is a Unesco (United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture) world heritage site and famed as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean with its huge 150,000-strong population of giant land tortoises as well as a grand variety of crabs, rare flightless birds, sea cows, black-tipped sharks, sea turtles and manta rays, many of whom are now destined to become Hollywood stars as the film moves on to France, United kingdom, Russia, China, Korea and Japan to enthrall audiences with the sights and sounds of this last sanctuary of untouched nature.

With the support of the Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF), the film crew from Starlite Pictures visited Aldabra in 2011 to undertake the complex and difficult process of obtaining footage for the film.  As would be expected of filming in such a remote and hostile location there were many set-backs, including complications with the expedition vessel and finding the required escort of seven armed bodyguards (due to piracy activities in the area at the time). Of course there was also various dramatic situations regarding the technology and logistics during filming, for instance being in a lagoon full of sharks and one of the world´s fiercest tidal rips. With the excellent support of the SIF staff on the atoll however, the film crew successfully captured many of the unique flora and fauna of the atoll and the production of this film was underway.

A film that includes powerful scenes such as the dramatic birth of green turtle hatchlings and their courageous dash through the shallow coastal waters that are teeming with sharks. Audiences can look forward to exciting scenes such as this and much more in Aldabra, the 3D wildlife adventure feature produced by Starlite Pictures.
