New marine science forum launched
Young local marine scientists will be able to improve the skills needed to give oral presentations of their research results through a series of talks organised by the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA).
This new marine science forum will also given them the confidence to present their work at international meetings, conferences and symposia.
The talks will be held twice a month at the SFA and will also allow visiting researchers to present their work to a wider local audience.
The first session in the series was launched on Friday at the SFA conference room by Dr Nirmal Shah, president of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association, in the presence of principal secretary for natural resources and transport Veronique Herminie.
It was conducted by Dr Laurent Dagorn of the Institut de recherche pour le développement.
The presentation – Do yellowfin tuna orient towards fish aggregating devices (FADs)? – was based on his long-term study of the impact on pelagic ecosystems of tuna purse-seine fishing using FADs.
The SFA is encouraging local scientists to take an active part in the forum, which is purely marine science-based.
Presentations on topics such as fisheries conservation, turtles and whale shark research, as well as research on coastal and climate change issues, will be welcome, it says.
