New Russian ambassador accredited
The new ambassador of the Russian Federation to Seychelles, Vladimir Belous, presented his credentials to President James Michel at State House yesterday morning.
President Michel expressed the hope that Seychelles and Russia will reinforce the excellent relations that already exist between the two countries and that the new ambassador of the Russian Federation to Seychelles will add impetus to build and enhance new areas of cooperation.
The President and Ambassador Belous discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest such as tourism, investment, cultural exchanges, and military cooperation.
Ambassador Belous noted the fruitful cooperation that Seychelles and Russia have in the fight against piracy, human trafficking and organised crime.
Other examples of cooperation between the two countries include visits by Russian navy ships to Seychelles to take part in the National Day celebrations, Russian participation in the Carnaval International of Victoria and the numerous scholarships offered to Seychellois nationals by the Federation.
He also commended the President for Seychelles’ mediation and leadership in the political crises that was faced by Madagascar.
“My ambition is to bring more tourists to Seychelles and more investment in this important sector for the Republic of Seychelles. As such, this will create more work opportunities for Seychellois.
I hope to improve relations and understanding between our two countries,” said Ambassador Belous.
Besides working in his own country, Mr Belous has also held various diplomatic posts in mainly African countries like the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Republic of Zimbabwe and the Republic of South Africa.
The ambassador, who is to call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Patrick Herminie, during the day, is the 9th Russian ambassador to be accredited to Seychelles and will be based in Victoria.
The Republic of Seychelles and Russia established diplomatic relations in June 1976.
