New sports accord to boost China-Seychelles ties - 24.08.2010
The new agreement between the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and the General Administration of Sports of the People’s Republic of China, signed yesterday, will set up exchange programmes aimed at benefiting sports people in both countries.
It will also set up direct contact between the sports associations and federations in Seychelles and China.
Minister Vincent Meriton signed the documents for Seychelles, while vice-governor Feng Jianzhong signed on behalf of the Chinese sports administration.
Also present at the ceremony, which took place at Oceangate House in Victoria, were principal secretary for youth and sports Denis Rose, chief executive of the National Sports Council Alain Volcere, director-general for major games Eric Arnephie and Chinese government officials.
Mr Rose said the agreement comes at an opportune time as Seychelles is preparing to host the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) next year.
He explained that part of the agreement covers the complete renovation of the national swimming pool by the Chinese government.
This, he said, will start as soon as the selected contractor arrives in the country.
Still in relation to the IOIG, Mr Rose said the local sports body has submitted a list of priority areas where China can help. This includes local training of sportsmen, overseas preparation and training, equipment, and renovation and construction of sports venues.
