President sends World Cup congratulations to South Africa
President James Michel has sent a message of congratulation to South African President Jacob Zuma, his government and people on “this momentous achievement as the first World Cup on the African continent is about to kick off”. Mr Michel thanked Mr Zuma for inviting him to take part in the official opening ceremony today at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg and sent his regrets for not being able to attend. “Every Seychellois is proud that this is an African World Cup, because Africa is our continent,” said Mr Michel in his message. “We are proud to see our continent as the focal point for the world. These are uncertain times for economies around the world, and the hosting of this World Cup is a timely reminder that Africa is the continent of the future, the continent of opportunity and the continent of growth.” The President said Seychelles, as one of the smallest African nations, is pleased to play its part in this global celebration. “We are delighted to be able to share the joy of South Africa in hosting this landmark event, which will be remembered for generations to come,” he said. “Together, the nations of Africa are showing the true potential of our continent, the true potential of our sportsmen. It is truly the chance for South Africa, and Africa as a whole, to shine.” Mr Michel offered his full support to Mr Zuma on this “momentous occasion” and wished South Africa and its people every success in hosting the event on behalf of the African continent.
