Schools get new resource on gender violence
24.12.2009
Students and teachers have now a new resource on gender-based violence in their schools after a donation of books recently.
The Gender Secretariat in the Social Development Department handed over a pack of poetry books to the Ministry of Education, aimed at promoting behavioural change and increasing public awareness.
The donation was received by director general for schools Merida Delcy from the department’s senior research officer Tania Labiche.
All poems were taken from a national poetry competition organised earlier this year as part of activities to mark International Women’s Day.
The competition was based on the theme set by the United Nation but translated into Creole – Fanm ek zonm: zwenn ansanm pour aret vyolans kont fanm.
It was open to both genders, and almost 400 entries were received.
To mark the 16 days of activism against gender violence celebrated from November 25 to December 10, the secretariat has compiled the poems in a book.
It will be used as a way to bring more awareness to children and adults on the causes and consequences of domestic violence.
Mrs Delcy thanked the representatives of the department for the donation, which she said will be of great benefit to the students.
