Security in Seychelles’ EEZ to get big boost
Security in Seychelles’ extensive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is set to be enhanced with the commissioning of a coastal radar and integrated surveillance system sponsored by the Indian government.
The commissioning and hand-over of the facility to the Seychelles government took place yesterday during a ceremony at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base at Ile Persévérance.
Rao Inderjit Singh, Minister of State, Defence on behalf of the Indian government officially handed over the facility to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport Joel Morgan and together they unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
This was in the presence of the Chief of Defence Forces Brigadier Leopold Payet, senior defence forces officials from both India and Seychelles, the Indian high commissioner to Seychelles Sanjay Panda, among other guests.
The project was promised to Seychelles by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his landmark visit here in March last year when he commissioned the first radar atop Ma Josephine at La Misère.
