Seychelles’ accession process to the World Trade Organisation
Sixth working party held in Geneva
Seychelles has held its sixth working party meeting as part of its accession process to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland on July 3, 2014 and the Seychelles delegation was headed by the Minister for Finance, Trade and Investment, Pierre Laporte.
The meeting reviewed the Seychelles draft working party report, which provides detailed and updated information on Seychelles' trade regime. Sixteen countries expressed support for Seychelles’ accession process and for the accession to conclude by end-2014.
Seychelles also held further bilateral negotiations with the United States on July 1, 2014. This is the only ongoing bilateral negotiation, which is now in the final stages. The target of the Seychelles negotiating team is to conclude the bilateral negotiations with the United States by end-July, 2014. This would pave the way for the final working party meeting in September to finalise the remaining technical issues and Seychelles' draft accession package, and accession before the end of this year.
On July 2, the principal secretary for natural resources Michael Nalletamby chaired a plurilateral meeting on agriculture during which the current domestic support provided to the agricultural sector by the government of Seychelles was formally approved.
On the sideline of the WTO accession meetings, Minister Laporte also paid a courtesy call on WTO director general Roberto Azevedo, who commended Seychelles' progress in the accession process.
Mr Azevedo also pledged the continued support of the WTO secretariat toward Seychelles' process including technical help both pre and post accession. Minister Laporte also conveyed the government of Seychelles' gratitude for the continuous support of the secretariat during this process.
The Seychelles delegation included the Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Seychelles to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Geneva, Vivianne Fock Tave, the principal secretary for natural resources Michael Nalletamby, the chief negotiator for WTO accession, Charles Morin, the director general of the trade division Cillia Mangroo, and other staff of the trade division of the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Investment.
