Seychelles’ ambassador to Russia accredited
24.12.2009
Claude Morel, Seychelles’ diplomatic envoy based in Paris, has presented his credentials to President Dmitry Medvedev to become non-resident ambassador to the Russian Federation.
The ceremony took place at the Kremlin in Moscow on December 16, and Mr Morel then met senior officials who assured him of the Russian government’s help in fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean.
This follows talks President James Michel had with Rear Admiral Sergei Alekminskiy during the latter’s visit to Seychelles in early October.
Russia, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has recently appointed a special representative to engage with other countries in promoting a lasting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
Among other issues discussed were the reinforcement of collaboration between the two countries in international affairs, particularly in the framework of the UN system, and the strengthening of bilateral relations.
Mr Morel also discussed short and long-term training for Seychellois students in Russian institutions of higher learning, tourism expansion with the Air Seychelles weekly flight to Moscow, and the future opening of an honorary consulate in the Russian capital.
