Seychelles gets first resident Sri Lankan HC
Cooperation between Seychelles and Sri Lanka has developed to another level since the respective Presidents of the two countries, James Michel and Mahinda Rajapaksa, exchanged state visits over the last two years.
The latest important development being the nomination of the first resident Sri Lankan high commissioner to Victoria, in the name of Rajatha Piyatissa.
Although the two countries have established diplomatic relations since October 1998, all the three previous diplomatic representations had been non-resident. The new Sri Lankan high commission will be situated in the Capital City Building in Victoria.
Accompanied by the Consul of Sri Lanka to Seychelles Roy Fonseka, Mr Piyatissa presented his credentials to President Michel at State House yesterday morning.
Commenting on why his country has decided to set up a permanent mission in Seychelles, he said that as island nations the two countries have so much to share especially in the fields of tourism, commerce and trade.
Mr Piyatissa added that he is looking forward to working here as the already good relations between his country and Seychelles added to the local peaceful environment will render his work easier.
“Our two presidents have good relations, so this will help me in my work here. It will not be a big challenge as my work has been made easier by the already good cooperation. I will enjoy working here as I love the country. As we say, small is beautiful and I will add that small is inspiring. Moreover, your people live in peace and harmony,” he said.
During his visit to State House yesterday morning, Mr Piyatissa also called on Vice-President Danny Faure and will today meet the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Patrick Herminie.
