Speaker returns from East European visit
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Patrick Herminie, returned to the country from a two-leg official visit to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Slovakia.
The visits were made on invitations of Valentina Matviyanko, the chairperson of the Federal Council which is the Upper House of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, and Peter Pellegrini, the Speaker of the National Council of Slovakia.
During the visits the two sides discussed issues ranging from training to trade and mutual support on key international issues such as piracy climate change and Seychelles’ bid to be a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nation in 2017.
Both sides explored ways and means of further strengthening the relationship between their respective parliaments.
Dr Herminie also met high officials in both countries including the acting President of the Russian Lower House, the State Duma and paid a courtesy call on the President of the Slovak Republic, Andrej Kiska.
During the visits, the National Assembly delegation -- which also comprised David Payet, the parliamentary friendship representative for East European countries of the International Affairs Committee and Shelda Commettant, the acting Clerk to the National Assembly -- had the opportunity to meet Seychellois students studying in the two countries.
