Students enroll to join Seychelles University soon

06.07.2009

The dream of a Seychelles University moved a step closer to reality on Saturday when Seychellois youths from Central Mahe interested in joining it filled in enrolment forms.

They did so in the first roadshow meeting presided over by the chairman of the university’s foundation Dr Rolph Payet at the International Conference Centre.

They are expected to return the filled in application forms to the foundation soon ahead of an October start of studies at the university.

Saturday’s meeting was attended by about 100 interested youths and the next one will be at Beau Vallon on Saturday.

Dr Payet told them studies will kick off at the Anse Royale campus of the university where the facilities will be upgraded to include better internet access among other improvements.

“We are working with telecommunication companies to install an optic fibre link for higher internet speeds,” he said.

He said the university will start off with about 85 students who in addition to getting degrees from Seychelles will also get another one from the University of London similar to that other overseas students will get.

“Although student who study here will have a different experience from that of those who study in London, the award is assessed to the same standard as internal students registered on a University of London programme,” he told them.

Dr Payet said small universities have special advantages like lecturers being able to give individual attention to each student.

He said studying at the university will cost R300,000 for a three-year programme which can be paid in annual installments of R100,000 or a termly R35,000 but also said scholarships will be possible from the government and the private sector
“There is a foundation studies programme designed to help those who do not currently possess the required qualifications for an undergraduate enrolment to acquire the qualifications,” a brochure he gave them read.

“In future the university will accredit students without formal academic qualifications but who possess prior learning and experience. It aims to provide access to students from a wide range of backgrounds through flexible entry routes although A’ levels and equivalent academic qualifications will remain the principal pathway for degree courses,” he said.
