‘Talks on WTO joining terms begin this month’ - 08.11.2010
Negotiations of the terms under which we will join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will begin this month, Charles Morin, chief negotiator for Seychelles’ accession to the WTO, has said. “We will this month submit our offers to the WTO. Our first working party will enter negotiations with the organisation later this month,” he told Nation last week. “There is no way of saying what to expect. We will have to see what the WTO member states are requesting from us and to what level they expect to see our goods and services offers open up,” Mr Morin said at the end of sessions held to educate several groups of people on why some of our laws need to be adjusted. He said the 153 member countries of the organisation have been looking at our Memorandum of Foreign Trade Regime (MFTR) and asking questions about it. “The MFTR is like the bill of health showing how healthy the economy of a country is and what laws exist and if they are compatible with the international ones.” He listed employment, customs, immigration, investment, phytosanitary and licensing laws as some of those that the countries have been showing keen interest in. The US, Canada, the European Union nations and Australia are the main countries which have been asking questions about Seychelles ahead of our joining the WTO, he said. “They are interested in us joining the WTO because we will mutually have easier access to each other’s markets.” |
