Top scouts back from summit in time for AGM
09.05.2009
Chief scout Bernard Elizabeth and chief commissioner John Marie have arrived back from a scouting summit in Nairobi, Kenya, just in time for the Seychelles Scouts Association’s annual general meeting today at the National Institute of Education.
They had been attending the 2nd Africa Scout Summit, which was attended by 119 people, including delegates from all African national scout organisations (NSO) except one, and ended in a convivial and colourful closing ceremony.
The summit, which was declared a great success by all who took part, could go down in the history of scouting in Africa as a landmark event. Apart from African delegates, there were guests, partners and World Organisation of the Scout Movement officials from all over the world.
At the end of the event, through their final statement, delegates declared: “We reaffirm our commitment to serving the needs of young people in Africa and to provide better scouting for them.”
High on the agenda were, among other items:
• Evaluation of the 10-year plan for scouting in Africa, which was adopted in Gabon in 2001;
• Discussion of the remaining tasks and future challenges of the final two years of the plan;
• A report on the achievements over the last seven years in the areas of adult resources.
The summit was also a chance for the members of the Regional Scout Committee to work in partnership with key leaders from NSOs to plan an appropriate agenda and prepare for the Africa regional conference that will take place in Botswana in September.
Here in Seychelles, the chief scout and chief commissioner will report on the scouting situation in the country and oversee election of new office bearers.
The highlight of this year’s AGM will be an award presented for the first time to someone who has made a significant contribution to the scouting movement.
