WHO renews its support to Seychelles’ health ministry

Every two years the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Ministry of Health develop a two-year cooperation plan, known as the Country Cooperation Programme in which the national health priorities are aligned to the WHO’s programme of work.

Under the Country Cooperation Programme, WHO provides an approximately 1.6 million dollar grant to the government, which contributes to the achievement of the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the 2014/2016 programme was signed yesterday at the Ministry of Health between the Minister for Health Mitcy Larue and the WHO country representative Dr Cornelia Atsyor in the presence of the principal secretary for Health Peggy Vidot, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Health Care Agency Dr Suresh Menon, Public Health Commissioner Dr Jude Gedeon and other health officials.

Following the signing ceremony, Dr Atsyor described the occasion as an important landmark of cooperation between the WHO and Seychelles which will improve the health of the Seychellois people within the next two years.

She said that the renewal of the programme was the result of dedication and hard work on the part of the Ministry of Health which provided valuable directions to the WHO.

Dr Atsyor stressed that her organisation not only provides financial support to Seychelles, but offers technical assistance to the country as well.

“Financial support is only a minor contribution as our major support is technical. As a technical agency in the United Nations and with a mandate for health, we also provide extra budgetary support. For example we intervened last year following flooding caused by heavy rains and we also provided laboratory supply and training,” she said.

The WHO representative has expressed hope that the cooperation will continue not only with the Ministry of Health but also with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as the private sector in order to achieve what she has called “the best health outcomes for the people of Seychelles”.

Accepting the grant on behalf of the government of Seychelles, Minister Larue expressed her appreciation for the funding which she said will contribute to the implementation of priority health programmes.

She was also appreciative to the WHO which she noted has always responded to Seychelles’ health demands.

The health minister concluded by expressing her sincere gratitude to the WHO for the long and on-going partnership.

She reminded that the organisation has influenced our Constitution and policies by inspiring provisions for “health for all and health by all”.

She also thanked Dr Atsyor for her personal involvement in the Seychelles-WHO cooperation.

Under the Country Cooperation Programme, the WHO will for the next two years be providing around 1.2 million dollars which will go towards priority programmes such as immunisation, HIV and Aids treatment, maternal and child health, health systems strengthening and communicable and non-communicable disease control as well as the purchase of medical equipment and supplies.
